World Cheese Gold Award

South Caernarfon Creameries scooped Gold for the Red Leicester at the prestigious World Cheese Awards held in Norway. We also won Silver for our Extra Mature Cheddar and Bronze gongs for our Medium Cheddar and Reduced Fat Cheddars, taking the total number of awards for 2018 to 69.

South Caernarfon Creameries captured the Gold Award for its Red Leicester cheese in the prestigious World Cheese Awards competition held in Norway. On top of that, our mature cheddar won the Silver Award and reduced-fat medium cheddar and cheddar of bronze. This brings the total prizes at 2018 to 69.

Red Leicester is available to wholesalers in 20kg blocks and is sold in pre-packs in the supermarket's own label across Wales.

In addition, Red Leicester received the Gold and Silver Award in the International Cheese and Dairy Awards competition held at Nantwich. 10 awards were won there including gold for the half-fat branded Dragon cheese and silver for the less fat cheddars. The Dragon brand lower fat cheese was awarded the best for the show and the top cheese at the Royal Welsh Show 2018, and the finest Welsh cheesemaking the best cheese made in Wales.

This followed the excitement of the rebranding of the Pobolgoian Dragon cheeses made here at HDA. Our 80 birthday was also celebrated in 2018.

The success also came after a significant investment of £ 13.5m here at HDA. Investment has been made in modern cheese and packaging processing units allowing new cheeses to be produced using traditional industrial-scale techniques and suitable for British supermarkets and export markets.

To summarise 2018, HDA won 15 gold, 22 silver, 26 bronze and six additional awards from other producers including true Taste Awards, Devon County Show, British Cheese Awards, Royal Welsh Show, cheese Awards International, South West Cheese Awards, World Wide Cheese Awards and World Cheese Awards.

Alan Wyn Jones, managing Director said:

The World Cheese Awards are truly a world-wide event and we are delighted to have received gold, silver and bronze awards for our cheeses with so many competitors. This is fantastic news for our staff and our 125 members who are Welsh farmers that supply the milk to make the cheese.
